Some documents specify whether simplex mode or duplex mode printing is required, others do not. Some printers can only print on one side of the paper while others can print on both sides and may even be capable of switching from one 'plex' mode to the other in the same print-run. EscapeE 'eE' iconEscapeE provides a comprehensive range of options and overrides so that you may configure the best print setup for outputting your document.

Choose Configuration... from the 'Options' menu (or press F8) then select the Printer tab.
To ignore the original document's print-mode, tick Override print file setting.

True 'Simplex' printers can only print on one side of the paper. Many modern printers, however, are able to print on both sides but may be configured to leave the 'back' of the paper blank, simulating simplex.

Select Simplex.

'Duplex' printers can print on both sides of the paper. How the 'back' page relates to the 'front' page depends on the orientation of the pages in the document. You may choose:

Duplex-long edge binding for portrait documents or
Duplex-short edge binding for landscape documents or
Default. An undefined duplex mode that enables you to set the plex mode at the printer.

Some jobs contain simplex pages and duplex pages – for example, a duplex manual with a simplex title (banner) page. These jobs must be printed on a duplex printer in a duplex mode. If your selected printer cannot switch between simplex and duplex during a print run, EscapeE may be configured to simulate the switch by inserting a blank page on the reverse of any page specified as simplex:

Tick Simulate simplex using duplex (long) for portrait documents or
Tick Simulate simplex using duplex (short) for landscape documents.

Tip:  A drop-down list of Duplex override options may be visible on the Configuration, Export and Direct printing dialogs. This box is blank by default but an option shown in maroon forewarns that a duplex-override on export is in force:

Simplex

Prints on one side of the paper only.

All –> Long edge

Paper is printed on both sides, in portrait so that pages turn along the long edge.

All –> Short edge

Paper is printed on both sides, in landscape so that pages turn along the short edge.

Duplex –> long edge

Blank back pages are added to simplex pages to simulate a fully duplex document, in portrait so that pages turn along the long edge.

Duplex –> short edge

Blank back pages are added to simplex pages to simulate a fully duplex document, in landscape so that pages turn along the short edge.

As in the file

Use the plex specification from the source file.

Unspecified

Some PDF viewers only allow files to be printed in the 'plex' mode specified in the source file. On export to PDF, this option removes from the output file any plex specification that may have been supplied by the source file, enabling you to print it in the plex mode of your choice.
